Ursuline Academy

The Challenge

With a long history of community service and college preparatory education, the Ursuline Academy campus is anchored by Merici Hall, a beautiful three-story architectural gem built in 1925. However, the building’s elevator didn’t meet current standards. As is the case with many historic buildings, the footprint is narrow, and the size and height of the rooms limit the functions that can occur. Addressing all of the programmatic needs in an existing footprint wouldn’t work. Along with Merici, Brescia Hall, a 2-story education building built in 1960, wasn’t accessible from the upper-level classrooms.

The Solution

With Hartnett Hall, M+H was able to create science labs, a music room and a dance space, while connecting five different floor levels though one single addition. Through a combination of sloped floors and a new elevator, Hartnett Hall provides barrier-free access to all three buildings and expands the program and mission of Ursuline Academy.
