Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange

The Challenge

Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange desperately needed to create an office that represented its culture and supported its business strategies. The project’s main goals included energy efficiency and protecting FREIE’s technology hub. Additionally, the facility needed to reinforce the brand and still feel rural while placed in an urban setting.

The Solution

The 2-story office building is nestled into a slopping site, creating a friendly 1-story presence to the local community while allowing the two stories on the backside of the property to open up and take advantage of a wooded setting. Limestone on the facade echoes the region’s natural materials, while large expanses of glass and clerestory windows allow daylight in the space and reduce lighting costs. The remainder of the site amplifies the goals of the project with half of the acreage left undisturbed for agricultural use and a meandering walking path giving employees an opportunity to take advantage of the natural setting.

“I think you captured my dream, I really like the look.”
