Fish Stories!

One of our Associates, Larry Valenza, has been fishing since he was a teenager.  But it is his week-long excursion to Canada every other year he looks forward to the most.  “I started fishing in Missouri with my future father-in-law when my wife and I were dating.  After he passed in 1997, I took his place on the trip to Canada with my brothers-in-law and some family friends.  I’ve always regretted not being able to make the trip with him.  Next year my son is going to make his first trip to Canada with us, which is going to be great.”

In total, there are 10 men on 5 boats. “Shore lunch has become a well-oiled machine, with everyone having a specific job.”  Valenza is the only one from St. Louis; the rest of the group are from Kansas City, New Hampshire and South Dakota.  For more than 15 years they’ve gone to Fisherman’s Cove on Lac Seul in Ontario.  “Prior to Lac Seul we did fly-in trips to remote outpost lakes in Ontario.  Then we got older and opted for more deluxe accommodations!”

“We fish for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.  We don’t count the fish, but if I had to guess I would say we catch about 50 fish per man every day.”  The fish range in sizes and it’s not uncommon to catch several walleye approaching 30” and pike over 40” during the week.  “The fishing is incredible, and the amount of wildlife we see each day from our boat is astonishing.  We see moose, deer, bald eagles, beavers, otters, pelicans, and bears.  It’s a great place to get away from the cell phone and computer and hit the reset button.”
